Australia narrowly defeated the Indian Women’s Hockey Team 1-2 in their FIH Hockey Pro League 2024/25 (Women) game on Sunday at the Lee Valley Hockey & Tennis Centre. Australia’s goals came from Amy Lawton (37′) and Lexie Pickering (60′), whereas India’s lone goal came from Vaishnavi Vitthal Phalke (3′). Australia rallied with a goal in the third and last minute of the fourth quarter to win the match after India had taken the lead early on.
With three consecutive penalty corners in the opening minute, India got off to a strong start and put further pressure on the Australian defense. India maintained their momentum and took control of the game by scoring the first goal in the third minute. The ball was forward until Navneet Kaur transferred it to Sharmila Devi on the left, who deflected it into the net after playing it to the far post for Vaishnavi. Navneet nearly extended the advantage but missed the mark by a short margin as India kept up the pressure. Near the end of the first quarter, Australia won two consecutive penalty corners, but India held their lead thanks to strong defensive play.
In the second quarter, Australia started to play better and create more scoring opportunities. India entered the second half with a goal in hand, but despite their midfield battles and possession exchanges, they were unable to separate in the second quarter.

In the third quarter, Australia exerted greater dominance and made the Indian defense work harder. Greta Hayes came dangerously close to scoring as she attempted a shot into an empty net, but her teammate accidentally stopped the ball. Australia launched another onslaught in the 37th minute, but Amy Lawton’s incredible strike gave them the equalizer this time. After successfully stealing the ball from an Indian defender, Amy fired a strong shot from the circle’s edge that went past the goalie and into the bottom right corner. As the game entered its final quarter, the scores were tied for both teams. The Australian goalie produced a great save to keep her team in the game after India was awarded a penalty corner. India had four consecutive penalty corners in the 54th minute, but they were unable to score. On their third try, Neha’s shot missed the net by a few inches after deflecting and hitting the post.
Australia completed their comeback in the game by converting a penalty corner with 34 seconds remaining. To win all three points, Tatum Stewart made the ideal pass to Lexie Pickering on the right, who caught the Indian goalie off guard and deflected the ball into the net.
India will next play Argentina on 17th June 2025 at the same venue.
