In the Asian Champions Trophy 2024 final, Jugraj Singh has come up as the unlikely superstar for the Indian men’s hockey team. He scored the winner against China in the final champions trophy. Initially, there was no goal in the first three quarters. However, he was able to hit the net in the 51st minute.
Although, for the 27-year-old, this was an unexpected goal. It was the greatest moment for Jugraj, who used to sell tricolor flags and water bottles to support his family financially. Achieving something unexpected makes people around you happy.
Sukhjeet Singh, his father, worked as a porter for around 30 years. The father revealed that his son had to go for multiple jobs as a child to support his family.
His father stated, “I have no idea about anything apart from doing hard labor. I and the family are extremely proud of our son. Earlier, he used to sell Indian flags at the Beating Retreat ceremony. Jugraj did this to help me run the family, and now he has reached to great heights.
Also, he would have been on the same path if Navjit Sign, the coach, had not spotted him. The coach began coaching Jugraj at a government senior secondary school on the grass field. He impressed many of them with his talent.
“Jugraj had a good build in comparison to other kids his age. Possibly because he lifted big things when his dad needed assistance, Navjit said.
He even enlisted the aid of his friends in Canada and England to assist him buy hockey equipment for his students.
Jugraj enrolled in the Baba Uttam Singh National Hockey Academy in Khadoor Sahib in 2009 and participated in Nehru Cup games for the following four years.
Jugraj maintained putting in a lot of effort, and in the FIH Hockey Pro League 2021–22, he was eventually rewarded with making his senior Indian men’s hockey team debut.
