Rams don’t plan to add players at trade deadline

  A few weeks ago, the Rams inched toward becoming sellers at the trade deadline. Three consecutive wins later, they’re not selling, with one exception. They’re also not buying. Coach Sean McVay was asked by reporters on Monday whether the Rams have discussed potential trade acquisitions at tomorrow’s deadline. “No, there hasn’t been anything that we’ve talked about,” McVay said. “Nothing of that nature.” The Rams continue to explore a trade of veteran cornerback Tre’Davious White, who is an odd man out on the depth chart. “There’s a possibility,” McVay said regarding a White trade. “[General Manager] Les [Snead] has had some dialogues with some teams. Those are very fluid conversations so there is a possibility, but nothing is imminent as of right now. . . . ‘Tre’ is a guy that I know there has been some dialogue between Les, Kevin [Demoff] and his agent, so we’ll see if anything ends up coming to fruition.” If a trade is going to happen, it needs to happen before 4:00 p.m. ET on Tuesday. If there’s no deal to be had, the Rams could release White. The Rams and White’s agent also could work out a deal to reduce his entitlement to termination pay, if his contract isn’t claimed on waivers. White has a base salary of $1.5 million. Todd Bowles says Bucs gave “very minor” consideration to going for two after late TD

  The Buccaneers had the Chiefs on the ropes. All they had to do was go for two after scoring a late touchdown, and they would have beaten the Chiefs, right? After the game, coach Todd Bowles said he gave “very minor” consideration to going for two. “We wanted to get it to overtime,” Todd Bowles told reporters. “With the wet conditions on the field, we feel like we had to go into overtime instead of go for two.” A successful conversion would have given Tampa Bay a 25-24 lead, and Patrick Mahomes would have had 27 seconds to get the home team in range for a game-winning field goal. Would you have bet against that? Before answering, ask the Bills. Mahomes needed only 13 seconds to engineer a field goal that forced overtime. Give Mahomes more than twice that amount, and watch what happens. With the game tied, the Chiefs’ drive ended with a punt on fourth and one. If the Chiefs had needed to score, they would have gone for it. Again, would you have bet against Mahomes? It’s one thing to go for two with no time on the clock, which the Patriots should have done on Sunday in Tennessee. When dealing with Mahomes when the game is on the line, 27 seconds is an eternity. Then there’s the question of whether the Bucs had a goal-line play they liked. They’d just used two of them from the one. Did they like the next play on the list? Even if they did — and even if they’d converted — Mahomes and the Chiefs would have gotten the ball with 27 seconds and three timeouts. Again, would you have bet against Mahomes? Jeff Ulbrich: Playing Thursday gives Jets a chance to get a bad taste out of our mouth

  Jets interim head coach Jeff Ulbrich is embracing the opportunity to have a short work week. Jeff Ulbrich was asked whether it’s a good or bad thing for his team that they’re playing the Texans on Thursday night, with less time than usual to prepare, after Sunday’s ugly loss to the Patriots. Jeff  Ulbrich says they’re embracing it. “It’s a fantastic thing as far as getting the taste out of your mouth. To sit on that one for six days is — I mean, it’s hard enough to sit on it for one day. So I believe it’s a good thing for us right now,” Jeff Ulbrich said. Jeff Ulbrich added that quarterback Aaron Rodgers came out of Sunday’s game feeling good and won’t have any issues with his body needing more rest. The Jets were 2-3 when they fired head coach Robert Saleh and are now 0-3 under Jeff Ulbrich. They’re rapidly running out of time to turn this season around, and they desperately need to get a turnaround started soon. Cameron Sutton reinstated to Steelers after eight-game suspension

  The Steelers will have cornerback Cameron Sutton available for the rest of the season. Cameron Sutton, who was suspended eight games for violating the NFL’s personal conduct policy, had his suspension lifted on Tuesday. He currently has a roster exemption and does not count toward the Steelers’ 53-player limit, but they can add him to their active roster if they decide he’s ready to play. Cameron Sutton started all 17 regular-season games and all three postseason games for the Lions last year but was but by the Lions in March when news broke that he had an active arrest warrant out for him in a domestic violence case and had failed to turn himself in. Cameron Sutton was actually in the Lions facility when the news broke, and the Lions decided they no longer wanted him to be part of their team. For the Steelers, Sutton is a potentially significant mid-season addition. Not many teams can add a starting-caliber cornerback at this time of year, but that’s what the Steelers have effectively just done. Kyle Shanahan: Christian McCaffrey hasn’t had a setback since he began rehab

  49ers running back Christian McCaffrey will remain in Santa Clara this week, working to return from bilateral Achilles tendinitis. The 49ers plan for him to return to practice next week following the team’s off week and, if all goes well, return to the lineup in Week 10. “We hope it does go that way,” coach Kyle Shanahan told KNBR on Tuesday, via 49erswebzone.com. “It’s been trending that way, and it’s been ever since we shut him down and gone through these real slow steps. It’s getting there. He hasn’t had a setback, and hopefully, he has a real good week, and we can get him into practice next week, which obviously would be huge for us.” Christian McCaffrey has not played this season, going on injured reserve Sept. 14. Once the 49ers open Christian McCaffrey’s practice window, they have 21 days to activate him on the roster. Otherwise, he will revert to IR for the rest of the season. Aaron Rodgers hopes to be “back to my faster-than-Godchaux speed”

Patriots defensive tackle Davon Godchaux honestly assessed where Jets quarterback Aaron Rodgers is physically now. After New England’s 25-22 victory on Sunday, Godchaux said of Rodgers, “Hall of Fame quarterback. I Hate to see him go out that way. . . . He doesn’t look the same. . . . Shit, I could run him down and catch him. He doesn’t look mobile at all.” Aaron Rodgers hadn’t heard Godchaux’s comments, but he didn’t argue. “He’s probably right,” Aaron Rodgers said Tuesday, via Rich Cimini of ESPN. “Yeah, I was hurting, but I feel better today.” Aaron Rodgers tore his Achilles on the fourth play last season, but he said that injury hasn’t been an issue this season. This season, he has missed practice time with hamstring, knee, and ankle injuries. He is on the practice report this week with the knee and hamstring injuries but was estimated as a full participant Tuesday. Aaron Rodgers said he is taking care of himself “non-stop” and feeling better this week. “I expect to be able to do a lot more this week,” Rodgers said. “I’ll be under center and, hopefully, back to my faster-than-Godchaux speed.” Aaron Rodgers has 12 touchdowns and seven interceptions, and his passer rating of 85.1 ranks 20th in the NFL and below two rookies. “Yeah, not as good as I would’ve hoped,” he said of his season. “I’ve got to play better. I just have to be more efficient, and not turn the ball over too many times. Jim Trotter says his Nick Bosa column was “watered down” by The Athletic

  You can disagree with Jim Trotter regarding his views. There can be no disagreement that he has true courage. After being fired by the NFL for daring to question the Commissioner — twice — during Super Bowl press conferences about newsroom diversity and inclusion in the NFL Media newsroom (the case was settled earlier this month), Jim Trotter took a job with The Athletic. On Tuesday, he went public with his frustrations regarding the extent to which his column about Nick Bosa’s recent on-field MAGA hat was edited. “Full disclosure, this is the watered-down version of the original column,” Jim Trotter tweeted. “I was not allowed to properly, IMO, contextualize the significance and consequence of the moment because, I was told, I’d violate the NYT’s journalistic standards regarding sports and political commentary. But that’s a discussion for another day.” The New York Times issued a tomato/tomato statement to AwfulAnnouncing.com, explaining that the Times had nothing to do with the editorial decisions made by the sports website it owns: “The New York Times standards played no role in this process. The story went through the normal editing process at The Athletic. We don’t publicly discuss our editorial decision-making.” Trotter, who clarified that the watering down was done by The Athletic and not the Times, did publicly discuss the editorial decision-making. Folks at The Athletic might be agitated that he did. If so, too bad. Let the man speak his mind. He’s a columnist. Let him write his column. So what if the column blurs the line between sports and political commentary? Bosa did it first; that’s why the issue is relevant. When athletes choose to make sports political (and they have every right to do it), sports media has an obligation not to shy away from the issue but to analyze the activity and its ramifications. Trotter’s point is that, if the NFL does nothing regarding Bosa’s blatant violation of the rules regarding the display of political messages, the NFL will have created a double standard as to Bosa and Colin Kaepernick, who was shunned for making a statement in a way that fully complied with the rules as written. In Kaepernick’s case, evidence developed during his collusion grievance showed that the NFL chose to cater to the chunk of the fan base that hated Kaepernick for kneeling during the national anthem and ignored a similarly-sized percentage of the fan base that supported him. If the NFL stays silent as to Bosa, it will once again be kowtowing to a vocal minority that responds to legitimate dissent with hatred, insults, and threats. Yes, there was uncalled holding on the Commanders’ Hail Mary play

  Commanders quarterback Jayden Daniels used his mobility to buy nearly 13 seconds to set up and throw the pass that became the Hail Mary that lifted Washington over Chicago on Sunday. Aiding him in that effort were two instances of uncalled holding. Simms and I talked about it on Monday’s PFT Live. Both non-calls boosted the effort by Daniels to serve up a ball that had a chance to be batted and caught. It doesn’t change the outcome. Plenty of missed calls happen in football. The Rams cemented their win over the Vikings to start Week 8 with an uncalled face mask. There’s no protest to be filed over it, no matter how blatant the missed call might have been. Still, the officials did indeed fail to call at least two noticeable instances of holding on to the Commanders’ Hail Mary. Whether they didn’t see the holding or they didn’t think it would matter because the Hail Mary is the ultimate camel-through-the-eye-of-the-neeedle play, they didn’t drop a flag. And, yes, Hail Mary plays routinely entail pushing and shoving that otherwise would be regarded as pass interference. For years, however, the league has deliberately allowed a looser standard in those settings —as evidenced by the difficulty from five years ago in making pass interference calls and non-calls subject to replay review while carving out Hail Mary plays from the frame-by-frame search for contact. Regardless, when pass interference is blatant on a Hail Mary, it gets called. (Or, as in the case of the Fail Mary, it immediately ends a lockout of the regular game officials.) The holding that happened before the NFL’s latest successful Hail Mary was fairly blatant. And it wasn’t called. It’s OK for Commanders fans to admit it; they’re not going to take the win away. The broader point is that, no matter what the NFL does to enhance officiating, there’s still enough incompetence lurking in the execution of the job to make people suspicious that something else might be going on. DeMeco Ryans: We’re excited to see who steps up next at receiver

  Texans head coach DeMeco Ryans opened his Wednesday press conference by announcing that Stefon Diggs will miss the rest of the season with a torn ACL and said that the news is “definitely a blow” to the team’s offense. Later in the press conference, DeMeco Ryan’s attention turned toward how the team would move forward at the receiver spot. Nico Collins will miss at least one more game before he’s eligible to come off of injured reserve, so the team is missing two players who were a big part of their plans in the passing game. The trade deadline is a week away, which led to a question for DeMeco Ryans about whether he feels a need to augment the group as they head into the second half of the season. DeMeco Ryans didn’t make it sound like that was a priority. “We like the guys we have and our guys have been here,” DeMeco Ryans said. “They’ve been working, understand how we do things and what we do. We’re excited to see who steps up next.” Tank Dell, Xavier Hutchinson, Robert Woods, John Metchie, and Steven Sims are the receivers on the 53-man roster in Houston. Nick Bosa post-game hat message violated plain language of NFL rules

After Sunday night’s Cowboys-49ers game, NBC’s Melissa Stark was interviewing a trio of 49ers. Teammate Nick Bosa showed up briefly, wearing a hat and pointing to it. The message wasn’t obvious at first because it was white with gold lettering (and not the usual red with white lettering). It said, “Make America Great Again.” Regardless of which candidate is in the upcoming presidential election any hat worn by Nick Bosa (or anyone else) would have worn before, during, or after the game, it’s a clear violation of the rulebook. As flagged by Alex Simon of SFGate.com, the plain language of Rule 5, Article 4, Section 8 applies to post-game messages from players: “Throughout the period on game day that a player is visible to the stadium and television audience (including in pregame warm-ups, in the bench area, and during postgame interviews in the locker room or on the field), players are prohibited from wearing, displaying, or otherwise conveying personal messages either in writing or illustration, unless such message has been approved in advance by the League office. . . . The League will not grant permission for any club or player to wear, display, or otherwise convey messages, through helmet decals, arm bands, jersey patches, mouthpieces, or other items affixed to game uniforms or equipment, that relate to political activities or causes, other non-football events, causes or campaigns, or charitable causes or campaigns.” (Emphasis added.) Simon asked the league if Nick Bosa violated the rule, but he did not get a response. We’ve asked the league also. That’s a nonpartisan question. If the message supported Donald Trump, Kamala Harris, or any other candidate for any other office, the rule would still be broken. During his post-game press conference, Nick Bosa declined to elaborate on the situation: “I’m not gonna talk too much about it, but I think it’s an important time.” It wouldn’t have been a violation of the rules for him to explain why he thinks it is an important time, and why he believes it’s important to support the candidate he chooses to support. He would have been fully within the rules to do it — just as former 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick acted fully within NFL rules when he chose to kneel during the national anthem as a form of protest. It will be interesting to see what the league does. Because even if the league applies the rule as written, someone will undoubtedly twist it into the league being run by left-wing radicals who are trying to silence players.
