In true Rohit Sharma fashion, the Indian chess team celebrated winning their historic double gold medal in the Chess Olympiad 2024. On September 22, the men’s and women’s teams in Budapest made news when they won gold in their respective categories.
The young Indian chess players proudly wore their tricolor on the platform. When Tania Sachdev and D Gukesh imitated Lionel Messi’s famous stroll at the 2022 FIFA World Cup celebration, they drew attention. This happy gesture mirrored Rohit Sharma’s previous celebration following India’s victory in the T20 World Cup in 2024.
India’s results in the Chess Olympiad 2024
Making history, D Gukesh won his second gold medal as an individual and guided the men’s team to its first-ever Olympiad victory. He finished the tournament undefeated, winning nine and drawing ten games.
In addition, Arjun Erigaisi excelled on Board 3, winning 10 of his 11 games and earning the best performer award. This helped India achieve an incredible 21 of a possible 22 points.
The women’s team, which included Abhijit Kunte, Vantika Agrawal, Divya Deshmukh, Harika Dronavalli, Vaishali Rameshbabu, Tania Sachdev, and Divya Deshmukh, also won gold after the men’s team did. This was India’s first-ever double gold accomplishment at the Chess Olympiad.
The Indian ladies had earned a bronze in the 2022 tournament hosted in Chennai, while the men had previously won two bronze medals in the tournament in 2014 and 2022.
After winning ten games and giving up a lone 2-2 tie against Uzbekistan, the Indian squad finished with a total of 21 points out of a possible 22.
